Ash Vs. Evil Dead: An Honest Judgement

So, before I begin, I have to let you know that I am biased on this because horror is my thing. I’ve met Bruce Campbell, he’s a cool guy. I’ll do my best to stay on the straight and narrow. With that being said…Here we go.

For those of you who are uneducated enough to know who Bruce Campbell or Sam Raimi is here’s some history. Around 1981 Sam made a short called “Within the Woods” and from that made the script for “Evil Dead”. He raised the $400,000 to film the cult classic, and a horror icon, Ash Williams (Bruce Campbell) was born, and the rest is history. If you haven’t seen the original trilogy, you really need to.

Evil Dead was filmed to be a true horror film. “Evil Dead 2: Dead by Dawn” was a sequel began to take on a comedic spin, and finally, “Army of Darkness” really took a turn for the hilarious, and a cult status for the trilogy was certainly sealed.

In a serious world concerning zombies, witches, vampires or all things scary, show is certainly a breath of fresh air. Nothing can be fun anymore. All things considered, there was another sequel in the works, but, New Line Cinema was finding themselves short on dough and the project was scrapped. They did however plan a sequel to “Freddy vs. Jason” with our pal Ash in one of the main roles. They scrapped that too. But! They made two graphic novels called “Freddy vs. Jason vs. Ash” published by DC Wildstorm, superbly drawn by a good friend of mine, Jason Craig…

Fast forward to now. The writing stayed true to the trilogy, and is absolutely brilliant, if you like funny stuff. There was a hokey/campy feel that also makes its presence known in the show. Raimi directed the pilot, and it was very reminiscent of what originally made Sam famous.

Bruce Campbell, in the titular role of Ash, turns in a great performance as only he can do. He’s a great actor, but is in a lot of crappy stuff.

But, let’s not forget Lucy Lawless. She didn’t do an awful lot in the first episode, but she made her always ravishing presence known.

As for the rest, it’s a bunch of unknowns, who will surely soon be known. In the grand scheme of things, regardless of all of this shows greatness, I can’t see this show lasting longer than four or five seasons, none of the shows on STARZ do. But, they make some really great TV, and have the budget to keep it going.
I honestly don’t have any complaints about it (Don’t worry, there will be things that I love, that I review that I’ll find stuff wrong with and bitch about accordingly, I mean, even the soundtrack was awesome)
Look out Walking Dead, the man with the boom stick is back, and all I can say is “Hail to the king, baby!”

On a scale of 1 to 5 “bloody chainsaws” Ash vs. Evil Dead gets

Hey Mabrey, I just saw Evil Dead, and now I know why you shouldn’t get busy with trees. There may be a squirrel in there looking for nuts. -Fred
